Why?
The Scrap Iron 5K proceeds go to maintenance and preservation of the Bloody Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse guided boats and ships on the Savannah River Channel during a very important time in Daufuskie Island history. Back in the 1950's, islanders had to transport illegal moonshine to Savannah in order to make ends meet. After their oyster beds were destroyed from pollution, people ended up selling illegal corn liquor and when they were questioned by officials they would say they were hauling scrap iron.
